Itinerary
Our Bergamo tour offers a round trip transfer to Bergamo from Milan, taking place in the afternoon.
You will be picked up from Milan at 2,30 pm and taken on a minibus to Bergamo.
Bergamo is about 50 kilometers from the center of Milan, and easily reachable through a main highway in less than 1 hour.
Bergamo has two centres:
- “Città alta” (upper city): Bergamo’s enchanting old town, also known as “Città Alta”, is a medieval city surrounded by ramparts and 16th-century cyclopic defensive walls. Bergamo is actually one of the 4 Italian cities still completely surrounded by walls. Most of the impressive constructions in Bergamo Alta were erected in the sixteen century, when Bergamo was under Venetian domination.
- “Città bassa” (lower city).
Our minibus will bring you to the Città bassa, where you will take a scenic funicular ride to the Città Alta (the so called upper town on the hill).
Piazza Vecchia, adorned by an 18th century fountain, is the Renaissance heart of the old town. From there, you can easily walk to and visit historical and religious monuments such as:
- Palazzo del Comune: a high tower in Piazza Vecchia.
- Palazzo della Ragione: the most ancient monument of Piazza Vecchia, built towards the end of 1100 AD and rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century after a fire. You can visit the Palazzo which houses exhibitions and events.
- The Cathedral: dedicated to Sant’Alessandro, the patron saint of Bergamo, since 1638.
- St Maria Maggiore: founded in the 12th century, and restored and modified in the 17th century.
- Colleoni Chapel: mausoleum built in the 15th century as the personal shrine of mercenary leader, Bartolomeo Colleoni and his beloved daughter Medea.
- Baptistery: octagonal building, originally in Santa Maria Maggiore and was re-erected in 1898 right next to the Colleoni Chapel.
After exploring Bergamo, you will be transferred back to Milan.
